The Particle Physicist, His Wife, & His Mother

Benjamin was a late developer. Perhaps that was one of the reasons why he didn't get married until he reached the age of 42. There were other reasons too - he was a bit of a wimp, very much a 'Mother's Boy', and his high domed forehead and black square-framed spectacles made him look like a nerd, which, being a particle physicist, he probably was.

Every day at 7.45am precisely, Benjamin kissed his mother on her cheek as she handed him his lunch box. He walked around the corner of the quiet cul-de-sac and caught the number 79 bus at 7.52 am precisely. At 8.30, the bus dropped him off outside the large buildings owned by Phygos Research Corporation. Benjamin cleared security and set off on the ten minute walk through the extensive grounds until he reached his destination - Building G.

By 8.45am precisely, Benjamin was at his desk in the laboratory, happily continuing his research.

But at 9am, his world changed. Because at 9am, his new research assistant walked through the door and sat in the vacant seat opposite his desk.

"Good morning Dr Bun," she said. "I'm Violet Valentine. I've transferred over from Building K."

"Building K - Nuclear physics?"

"That's right. It was a temporary post, but Professor Rutherford was so pleased with my work he said I could have the next permanent position that became available. So here I am. Oh god - I just adore subatomic particles. Don't you?"

"Of course. How could anyone not be interested in subatomic particles?" What a stupid question.

"So what are we doing today, Dr Bun? I'm really looking forward to working with you."

"We're looking at extraction of quark and gluon densities of the proton. And, since we are to be working together, I see no reason why you shouldn't call me Benjamin."

"Thank you, Benjamin. This is so exciting!" beamed Violet.

"It surely is," agreed Benjamin. He flicked on his computer screen. "The extraction involves finding the best parameters of the polynomial functions consistent with the data. I take it you can program in Fortran?"

"But of course! I learned that when I was seven. You won't find fault with my programming skills, Benjamin."

The two scientists were so engrossed in their work, they didn't realise it was lunch time. Violet declared she was far too busy to bother about lunch, so Benjamin gallantly shared his repast of shrimp paste sandwiches and sausage rolls, so lovingly prepared by his mother.

As the weeks passed, Benjamin fell hopelessly in love with Violet Valentine. He adored her high domed forehead and her black square-framed spectacles, and thought her slightly cross-eyed expression was particularly endearing. She was so wonderfully clever and shared his passion for particle physics, and they talked long into the night about electrons, protons and neutrons.

It was Violet who popped the question of marriage and Benjamin accepted gratefully, much to the displeasure of his mother.

"Benjamin - you're still my little boy. You're not old enough to be getting married."

"I'm almost 43, mother. I have to leave the nest at some point.
